Learning the Values of Religious Moderation in the Context of Higher Education in Indonesia, Case Study at Yogyakarta State University
Abstract
Indonesia, as a country with religious and cultural diversity, requires education that promotes moderation and tolerance, particularly in higher education. Yogyakarta State University, as one of the state universities in Indonesia, has a responsibility to instill the values of religious moderation in students so they can live harmoniously in a pluralistic society. This study aims to explore how Yogyakarta State University implements education on the values of religious moderation among students. This study aims to analyze the implementation of religious moderation values at Yogyakarta State University in the context of higher education. Given the importance of tolerance and inclusivity in a pluralistic society, Yogyakarta State University strives to instill religious moderation values in students through various educational programs and campus activities. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with students, lecturers, and managers of religious education programs at Yogyakarta State University, as well as observations of activities related to religious moderation. Data were analyzed thematically to generate a comprehensive understanding. The results indicate that Yogyakarta State University has successfully integrated religious moderation values through religious education courses, interfaith dialogue forums, and student organization activities. These programs have demonstrated positive results in increasing understanding and tolerance among students. However, challenges faced include differences in religious understanding among students, the influence of radicalization from outside the campus, and limited facilities to support broader dialogue activities.
